Under floor heating is a technology which is used for heating up houses during the winters. The heating equipments are installed into the flooring of the house which heats up the floor initially and then eventually heats up the entire house at a gradual pace.
This type of heating covers the entire house and avoids scope for cold spots, thus making the house cosy and warm during the cold winters.
In comparison to radiators, under floor heating distributes heat more efficiently and does not circulate dust or other foreign particles. It also assists significantly in reducing the fuel and electric bills as it consumes less energy to run.
- Types of Under floor Heating Systems
There are two types of under floor heating systems.
- Hot water or Wet Under Floor Heating System
A wet under floor heating system can be an excellent option for you if your house is undergoing major renovation work, as it will require you to have the entire flooring removed, before have the system installed underneath it. This is also the reason wet systems are significantly costlier than the electric systems.
It is mandatory that professionals install the wet system as it involves a complex procedure of fitting plastic pipes and getting the plumbing connection right.
In this system, plastic pipes are laid on the sub floor. These pipes which are connected by a manifold pump water across the whole system. It is then covered by the under floor heating screed which conducts the heat through it. Once the screed is dried, the final flooring is installed on it.
It assists in reducing your water heating cost as the water used in the system is used at a very low temperature. The only problem with this system is that, sometimes getting the right temperature can be bit challenging, as it takes time to heat up as well as cool down. This is because it heats up through a layer of screed.
- Electric or Dry Under-floor Heating System
Electric under floor heating system is quite affordable in comparison to the wet under floor heating system and is easy to install as it can be installed by anyone with DIY expertise.
An advantage of electric system is that they do not cause any disruption to the structure of your existing floor. Thus you can install them anytime.
This system usually consists of electric cables or heating sheets which are attached to mesh mats or fixed to a continuous roll.
Unlike wet systems, these heaters are simply spread across the floor, over an insulated board and then are linked up to the power supply. They do not require a layer of screed and so they heat up quickly. Thus getting the right temperature is quite easier with the electric systems.
- Advantages of Under floor Heating Systems
Under floor heating can provide you with a lot of advantages. Let’s take a look at them.
- Energy and Money Saving Expert
The under floor heating systems use less energy to run which is unlike the radiators which use heavy amounts of energy which eventually increases you electricity bill. The under floor heating systems use approximately 15%-40% of the total energy which is because of its smaller size.
- Friendly with the Environment
This is the biggest advantage of under floor heating. They are very environment friendly as they can use energy from the renewable resources. They can also run in the form of heat pumps as well. This means, under floor heating systems can also heat up your house using just water.
- Requires No Maintenance
Maintenance can be a big task for people as it requires a lot of expenditure. But investments made on under-floor heating gives you a good pay back.
This is because if you install it correctly under your floor, then it will stay there and keep running for years as it will require no maintenance or servicing.
Under floor heaters are specifically designed in that pattern as frequently servicing the systems embedded into the flooring is not practically possible.
- Maintains Hygiene
Radiator or warm air heaters heat up the outside cold air and pass it inside your house. But such is not the case with under floor heaters.
Since they don’t supply air to heat up the house, they omit the chances of pollutants, germs, dust or any other foreign particles from entering your home.
This keeps your home clean and healthy. It also ensures that the air is not overheated, thus making the room feel less stuffy.
- They are Very Comforting
During winter, everyone wants warm and toasty feet. When under floor heating is installed, it initially warms up your feet and then the heat goes up through your whole body. Thus, it gives you a very warm and comfortable feel. The systems also covers the whole house and leaves no cold spots unattended.
- They Occupy No Space
The radiators are huge and they occupy a significant space in your home. Under floor heaters are installed under your floor and thus don’t occupy space at all, giving you more room to roam around in the house, enjoying the warm and cosy floor.
- Quick Heating
Under floor heaters take no time to warm up your house unlike the radiators. The radiators heat the air around them first, and then they reach out to cover the whole house, which takes a lot of time.
But, the under floor heaters heat up the whole house at the same time and so require less time for heating.
- They Match to Your Interiors
Under floor heating systems are very flexible as they can be used for almost any type of floorings such as wood, laminate, stone, carpet, etc. The systems do not affect the decor or the style of your room. You can get a wide range of under floor heating systems which suit your existing flooring or any type of new flooring you would want to install in your house.
